BIGGBYCOFFEE, located at 3430 Grand Avenue in Gurnee, Illinois, is a2,000-square-foot commercial coffee shop renovation aimed at creating a modernand efficient environment while leveraging the existing buildinginfrastructure. 3S MEP provided plumbing and electrical design services tosupport the renovation, with a focus on code compliance, system reliability,and seamless integration with existing building systems.

Theplumbing design was closely coordinated with existing facility conditions tomeet the operational needs of the coffee shop. Domestic water distribution wasconnected to the existing electric water heater and restroom facilities,reducing construction impacts and ensuring reliable service for all newplumbing fixtures and food service equipment. Significant effort was dedicatedto identifying, tracing, and verifying existing piping systems to ensureeffective compatibility between new and existing infrastructure. The sanitarydrainage system supports commercial kitchen operations and utilizes theexisting grease interceptor, reducing construction costs, minimizing materialwaste, and maintaining proper grease management for kitchen operations.

Specialattention was given to water quality and backflow protection requirements forfood service equipment. Dedicated backflow prevention devices were installed inaccordance with code requirements and manufacturer guidelines, including anLF009 backflow preventer for the ice machine and SD-3 backflow preventers forthe coffee brewer and espresso machine. A water softener system wasincorporated for the coffee brewer and espresso machine to enhance equipmentperformance and beverage quality per the client's operational requirements.Through careful planning and coordination, new plumbing installations weresuccessfully integrated with existing building systems while keeping thefacility operational and maintaining the project timeline, resulting in a reliable,code-compliant, and sustainable plumbing solution for BIGGBY COFFEE's dailyoperations.

Theelectrical design was closely coordinated with the existing 600A service,supporting a 400A estimated load while integrating existing restroom lightingto minimize construction impact. New, specialized branch circuitry and GFCIprotection were engineered for the commercial kitchen appliance arrangement incompliance with NEC requirements, ensuring safe, reliable power distribution.
